DIA DE LOS MUERTOS (DAY OF THE DEAD)

(Painting by Sandra F. Garcia)

This cake was very sentimental to me! My family has been celebrating Dia De Los Muertos every year for the past 5 years!

My mom is a beautiful artist who loves Mexican folk art! This cake was to be presented to her at the last house of the progression dinner celebration in honor of her Birthday! We were there celebrating the lives of those who had past before us, but we also wanted to celebrate the birth and life of a loved one still with us!
I tried to take one of her paintings that she is most proud of and duplicate it on to the cake! I think it came out good... she liked it!!
The bottom layer is strawberry, and the top layer is yellow cake filled in the middle with strawberry mousse, topped with a festive colorful vanilla butter cream icing!
14 inch round double layer (2 whole cakes)

The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos in Spanish) is a holiday celebrated mainly in Mexico and by people of Mexican heritage (and others) living in the United States and Canada. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and relatives who have died. The celebration occurs on the 1st and 2nd of November, in connection with the Catholic holy days of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day which take place on those days. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed!
